Allen Backhaus Obituary

Allen M. Backhaus, age 96, a Manitowoc resident, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 13, 2021 at The Villa at Felician Village, Manitowoc.

Allen was born April 5, 1925 in Manitowoc, son of the late Joseph and Ida (Neumeyer) Backhaus. He was in the United States Marines during WWII serving in Okinawa. On October 14, 1950 he married the former Genevieve Schmidt at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2017. Allen was a carpenter and cabinet maker. He was a Scout Master for 11 years with Troop 931 and a former member of the Manitowoc Rifle and Pistol Club. He also spent many years as a 4-H leader for woodworking. Allen was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Alverno, and a member of the building committee for St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community. He volunteered for meals on wheels with the Senior Center for 17 years and as Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Medical Center for 11 years. Allen was an avid gardener and also enjoyed woodcarving and archery.

Survivors include five daughters and two sons-in-law: Mary & Don Shimon, Ann & Bari Bolle, Theresa Griesbach, Genevieve “Genny” Leider, Ruth Backhaus, all of Manitowoc; eight sons and seven daughters-in-law: Joseph & Barbara Backhaus, Newton, John & Deborah Backhaus, Manitowoc, James Backhaus, ND, Alan & Diane Backhaus, Manitowoc, Francis & Tammy Backhaus, Green Bay, Patrick & Amy Backhaus, Manitowoc, Michael & Annette Backhaus, Valders, Mark & Wendy Backhaus, Manitowoc; 40 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; one brother: James Backus, Kaukauna; two sisters-in-law: Sylvia Hodzinski, Sheboygan, Harriet Mrotek, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by one great-granddaughter: Marcelena; seven siblings; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. noon on Monday, July 19, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Beaudry with burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Cemetery, Newton. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post #659 of Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, July 19, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:45.
