Gene Charles Meyer, 83, of Plymouth passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Aurora Sheboygan Medical Center.
Gene was born on September 30, 1941 to Joseph W. and Florence (Schuffelbotham) Meyer in the town of Plymouth. Gene attended Plymouth High School with the class of 1960. Gene and his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Schneider, were married on July 23, 1960. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2023. Together they ran Meyer Fur Farm for 44 years. Gene was past president of the Kettle Moraine Mink Breeders.
Gene loved the game of baseball, but as a player he struck out. In the mid 1970’s, when the boys who did not live in the city could not play on the city traveling teams. Gene started a team so any boy going to Plymouth school was eligible to play little league baseball. Some of the city boys, called us the farmers, but we thought, just wait! Over the next six summers, these boys got better and better, Gene showed them what it took to be winners, and win they did! Now it was time to play for Richards and Plymouth High School. In 1982 we took them through the state tournament with wins of 3-0, 3-0, and 9-1. Giving Plymouth High School, its first state championship in baseball. Seven of the starters and several of the reserves on this team were once called the farmers. Gene was very proud of that. Gene was also voted to the Plymouth Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.
Gene loved fishing in the spring for Crystal Lakes Big Blue Gills with his flyrod. He also enjoyed shooting his pump shotgun on the sporting clays course, where he once shot a 50straight on the triples course when 3 clay birds are released at the same time. Gene’s greatest love was his fox red labrador retrievers, who were also his pheasant hunting buddies. They gave him unconditional love. He used to say, most of my best friends wag their tails. Carol would walk along with him to watch the dogs hunt.
Gene is survived by his two sons: Rick (Jodi) Meyer and Randy (Martha) Meyer; grandchildren: Kayla (Chris) Wilke, Marissa, Logan (Abby), Collin (Diana) and Dylan Meyer; great grandchild: Belicia Meyer. Gene was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Florence Meyer; his wife of 63 years: Carol Ann; infant daughter: Wendy Jean; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Hubert and Elnora Schneider; sisters: Irene (John) Brickbauer, Evelyn (John Passini) Mary, Lou (Joe) Lasarewicz, and Kathy (Roland) Bruggink; brothers: Leroy, Kenny (Arlene), and Joe (Alice) Meyer; canine best friends who crossed the rainbow bridge and are waiting for him: Spike, Prince, Peppy, Felix, Cisco, Pancho, Buddy, Sunshine, Rosie, Missy, Foxy, Marley, and Cedar. They were all his very best friends, and he loved each of them as much as they loved him.
A memorial visitation to celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Wittkopp Funeral Home, 123 South Street, from 3:00 pm until 4:30 pm. Gene will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery next to his sweetheart Carol, and their baby girl, Wendy.
