Gerald “Jerry” B. Buth, Age 95, of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 25.
Jerry was born on October 29, 1930 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the son of John E Buth and Florence (Joachim) Buth.
Jerry graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1948, then went on to get a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1952. He then received his Master’s Degree in Education from University of New York-Oneonta.
Jerry married Nancy [Clemons] Buth on April 19, 1952, at Annunciation Church in Green Bay. They remained together for 69 years until Nancy’s death in 2020, building a family of three children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Jerry spent 38 years as a high school science teacher, first at Brussels High School in Brussels, Wisconsin (1952-1956), then at Washington High School in Two Rivers before retiring in 1990. He served as the Washington High School athletic director from 1980-83 and 1988-1990.
Jerry was known for his playful, constant sense of humor, his endless energy, and love of sports and inspiring zest for life. Jerry loved teaching, approaching it with a sense of wonder and passion. Many in his classes remember him as one of the best. He also spent many hours coaching basketball, baseball, and golf, advising the photography club and star gazing club, and refereeing football and basketball.
Jerry’s sense of humor worked both ways, as his shorter stature was folly for many classmates and friends. He took any teasing with a self-deprecating nature throughout his schooling and teaching career, culminating in the nicknames “Watch Pocket Rocket” and “Weasel” among teammates and media.
Jerry was very active in the community, serving as a member of the Two Rivers Education Association, Manitowoc City Teachers Association, WEA Retired Teachers Association, WIAA & Manitowoc/Two Rivers Officials Association, Two Rivers Knights of Columbus, and the Shoto Conservation Club. He was also a charter member of the Holy Redeemer Church in Two Rivers, serving as an usher regularly, and was a member of the Holy Redeemer Church Men’s Society and Parish Council.
Remaining to cherish Jerry’s memory are his children, Susan (Craig) Thomaschefsky, Don (Amy) Buth, and Laura (Mark) McCormick Hoskins; grandchildren, Emily (Brian) Hahn, Max Thomaschefsky, Jacob McCormick, Sam Buth, Molly (Isaac) Olstad, and Hannah Buth (Joel Swokowski); great-grandchildren, Piper Hahn, Delaney Hahn, Lydia McCormick, Zoey Olstad, and Rosalie Olstad.
Preceding Jerry in death are wife, Nancy (Clemons) Buth; brother, Robert Buth and son-in-law Michael McCormick (Laura).
