Herbert Bunke Obituary

Herbert L. Bunke, a cherished member of the Two Rivers community, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the age of 91, with his wife of 72 years, Marian, at his side. Born on June 3, 1932, Herb was a man of many talents, known for his unwavering dedication to his family and community, as well as his strong work ethic. Throughout his life, Herb touched the lives of countless individuals with his kindness and generosity.

Growing up in Two Rivers, Herb attended Washington High School, graduating with the Class of 1950. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served from 1951 to 1955 as part of the Strategic Air Command Unit. Herb married the love of his life, Marian Bohne, on December 15, 1951, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Two Rivers. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures.

Herb’s professional career was marked by dedication and success. He spent 40 years at Hamilton Manufacturing Co., where he rose through the ranks to become vice-president of manufacturing. Later, he continued his career at Metal Ware Corp., holding the same prestigious position until his retirement in December 1995. Herb’s leadership and work ethic were admired by colleagues and peers alike, leaving a lasting impact on the companies he served.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Herb was deeply involved in his community. He served on the boards of the Two Rivers Municipal Hospital serving one year as president, and the Community Hospital board for four years. Additionally, he was an active member of the Two Rivers Elks Club, the Two Rivers Rotary Club, where he served one year as president, and the American Legion. Herb also served on the Two Rivers city council for five years, was a member of the Two Rivers Senior Center and past member of the Two Rivers Historical Society. Additionally, Herb did volunteer work with his wife at Two Rivers Senior Center, Aurora Medical Center and St. Vincent de Paul store in Two Rivers. Herb’s commitment to service extended to his faith community, where he was a dedicated member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, serving on the Finance Committee and participating in the Men’s Club.

Herb was also a man of many hobbies and interests. He had a passion for woodworking and spent countless hours in his workshop crafting beautiful pieces of furniture and other projects. His talent and craftsmanship were evident in every piece he created, each one a testament to his skill and creativity. Herb’s woodworking projects brought joy to his family and friends, who cherished the handcrafted treasures he lovingly made. In addition to woodworking, Herb was an accomplished musician, playing drums with various bands throughout Manitowoc County, including the Red Raven Orchestra and the Hamilton Band (later known as the Two Rivers Municipal Band).

Herb’s love for Marian and their children was evident in every aspect of his life. Together, they enjoyed many golf outings with friends and cherished their annual trips to Florida. Herb also enjoyed bowling, playing poker with his buddies, and playing bridge in couples leagues. Herb took great pride in his role as a father and grandfather, supporting his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their endeavors. Whether attending sporting events, hosting family gatherings, or simply spending time together, Herb’s love and devotion knew no bounds.

Herb leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and creativity that will be forever cherished by his beloved wife, Marian; their 5 children: Gwen (Gary) LeClair, Two Rivers, WI; Mark (Joyce Young) Bunke, Brookfield, WI; David (Lisa) Bunke, Plymouth, WI; John (Peggy) Bunke, Waxhaw, NC; and Sara (Steve) Thiel, Chanhassen, MN; 16 grandchildren: Alicia (Shannon) McDonald; Joshua (Kara) LeClair; Jessica (Nathan) Karman; Amanda (Rohit) Itticheria; Elijah (Michelle) LeClair; Larissa (Nathan) Hoftizer; Alex (Jeanna) Bunke; Madeline Bunke; Laura and Adam Bunke; Molly, Max, and Mason Bunke; Mikaela (Adam) Goedken; Emma and Nora Thiel; 19 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marilyn Christel, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
