Ione E. Brick, 102, of Manitowoc passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026 at LakeHouse Manitowoc.
Ione was born October 28, 1923, and soon after baptized Ione Ella Anita Huebner at First German Ev. Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, WI. She attended Garfield School, First German Lutheran School, Washington Junior High, and two years at Lincoln Senior High. Her junior and senior year she attended Dr. Martin Luther High School and thereafter Dr. Martin Luther College where she graduated with a teaching degree in June 1944. Her first divine call placed her as a one-room teacher of grades 1-8 at Christ Lutheran Ev. Luth. Church in West Salem, WI. Her call also included playing the organ for all services and directing the choir.
After her marriage to Pastor Delmar C. Brick, also of Manitowoc, they lived in Kimberly and Appleton. While here she served as a substitute teacher in various WELS schools. In 1953, a call for Delmar to teach at Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) took them to New Ulm, MN. Ione taught at St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary School, and also served as a supervising teacher to students from DMLC. This position prompted her to return for several years of summer school classes at DMLC to attain a full bachelor’s degree which she completed in 1964. In 1965 she began working for the New Ulm Travel Service and continued working there for many years. She and Delmar provided the leadership for many tours, both domestic and international, for Travel Fun Tours. Ione retired in July 1987 when she and Delmar returned to Manitowoc. Ione became very active volunteering: as a docent for Rahr-West Museum, an usher at the Capitol Civic Centre, a volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce, a hostess at Manitowoc Visitors Center, and at Pinecrest Historical Village. Ione also served within Bethany Ev. Luth. Church on the altar guild, making and donating countless Hardinger baptismal napkins, and aiding with the offering counting and church mailings. Of her, Delmar once wrote:
“She was an excellent pastor/professor’s wife - a good mixer, easy to meet, attractive with a great smile, a person of strong faith and conviction, which she has shown and passed on to her children and grandchildren – a blessing from God.”
Ione is survived by three daughters: Nona Celia, Fort Mill, SC; Lois Brick, Centennial, CO; and Mary (Edwin) Spain, Spartanburg, SC: three grandchildren, Sarah (Bryan) Killian, Great Falls, VA; LTC Nona (LTC Doug) Healy, North Augusta, SC, and Michael Celia, Edison, NJ: and six great-grandchildren, Simon, William, Molly and John Killian, and Liam and Lisbeth Healy. She is also survived by one brother, Wayne (Diane) Huebner and special niece, Marge Jehle both of Manitowoc. Other surviving nieces, nephews and relatives reside in Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, Minnesota, Arizona, Washington, and Illinois. Ione was preceded in death by her husband Pastor/Professor Delmar C. Brick, her parents, Carl and Erna Huebner, two sisters, Ruth (Huebner) Teteak and Nona (Huebner) Stevens, and two brothers, Pastor Elton Huebner and Pastor Lloyd Huebner.
Funeral services will be held at Bethany Ev. Luth. Church on February 10, 2026 at 11am. Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 10 am until 11am. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
