Obituary

James Wallin McDonald passed peacefully to eternal life early Saturday morning, April 15, 2023.  He was surrounded by his loving family, wife, Ellie; daughter, Jane; grandson, Michael and granddaughter, Hannah at Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida.

Jim lived a very active and full life, enriched with many blessings with his family and lifelong friends.  He was born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin on November 29, 1933.  He graduated from Washington High School in 1952 and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1957.  While he was a student at Madison, he was a member of the Wisconsin Golf Team.

He married his first love and “the love of his life”, Ellen Martin, on August 27, 1955 in Two Rivers.  They resided in Neenah, Wisconsin, where he was employed with Marathon, a subsidiary of American Can, in their sales division.  His first daughter, Jane was born in 1957 and second daughter, Mary in 1958.  Jim, an avid and accomplished golfer, was Club Champion at Butte des Morts Country Club, Appleton, Wisconsin.  After receiving a promotion, the family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1961.  Jim's primary accounts were Proctor and Gamble and Kaiser Aluminum.  In 1965, Jim and Ellie assumed the ownership of Jensen's, a women's apparel store, in Two Rivers, from Ellie's aunt and uncle, Olga and Bo Jensen.  Jensen's had been a family-owned business since 1922.

Upon returning to Two Rivers, Jim was President of the Chamber of Commerce for 2 years and Club Champion at Branch River Country Club for another 2 years.  After closing Jensen's in 1987, Jim received his real estate license and began as a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Manitowoc for several years.

Jim was respected as a gentleman, liked by all, and known for his smile, gentle demeanor and quick wit.  He was a kind and loving husband, loyal father and an amazing grandfather.  He enjoyed many sports and was always active playing golf, tennis, racquetball, handball, curling and biking with his countless friends.  Upon retiring, Jim and Ellie wintered in Fountain Hills, just outside of Scottsdale, Arizona for many years and travelled to China with lifelong friends.  For the past 15 years, the couple split their year between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Naples, Florida.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert "Nubby" and Salome "Sally" McDonald, Two Rivers; his father-in-law, Dr. Richard Martin, mother-in-laws, Catherine and Imelda Martin, Two Rivers; brother-in-law, John Martin, Marietta, Georgia; daughter, Mary, Manitowoc; and grandson, Jonathan Leslie, Arlington, Texas.  Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Ellie; daughter Jane and husband John Leslie, Arlington, Texas; grandson Michael and wife, Katie Leslie, great grandchildren Jackson and Emma Kate, Colleyville, Texas; granddaughter Hannah and husband Ruben Hanssen, Arlington, Texas; sister-in-law, Maria Martin, Marietta, Georgia; niece Susan and husband Jim Bunda, Kennesaw, Georgia, their children, Alex and Casey and husband Trevor Howse; niece Peggy and husband Aaron Stecker, Dunwoody, Georgia and their children, Adam, Nina and Ben.  Survivors also include many other cousins and longtime family friends.

The family wishes to thank Lely Palms Rehab Center and Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida for their care of Jim during the final weeks of his life.  A private family memorial and celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
