JoAnn Tess Obituary

JoAnn Mary (Grall) Tess, 72, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama, with her beloved husband by her side. JoAnn was born on August 8, 1953, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the late Russell and Margaret Grall.

She graduated from Lincoln High School as a member of the Class of 1971 and went on to attend Silver Lake College, where she earned a degree in accounting. JoAnn built a successful career as an accountant with several local companies and was widely respected for her integrity, attention to detail, and willingness to help others. She was a trusted mentor and a loyal friend to many throughout her professional life.

On March 13, 1992, JoAnn married William Tess, the love of her life. Together, JoAnn and Bill created a life rich in love and shared joy. They delighted in life’s simple pleasures—working side by side in the garden, enjoying a burger at the Tower, vacationing in Gulf Shores, or relaxing together with a cocktail while listening to classic oldies.

JoAnn was an avid reader, often finishing four to five books each week, with a passion for thrillers, mysteries, and historical fiction. She had a natural gift for connecting with others through her cooking, candid conversations, and thoughtful advice. Always ready to help with taxes or engage in a lively discussion about history, JoAnn’s warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met. One of her greatest joys was becoming a grandmother to her cherished grandson, Jack.

JoAnn was blessed with many lifelong friendships that stood the test of time, and she held those relationships close to her heart.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Tess; her daughter, Angela (Thomas) Ellingson of Raleigh, North Carolina; her stepson, William Tess Jr. of Manitowoc; and her beloved grandson, Jack Ellingson. She is also survived by her sister, Jean (Mike) Kouba; her brother, Jim (Deborah) Grall; brothers‑in‑law Clayton Tess and Bob Tess; sisters‑in‑law Barb Tess, Pamela Maisi, Cheryl Flyod, Lisa Tess, and Debbie Green; and many nieces and nephews.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Margaret Grall, and by Nancy Tess, Keith Tess, and Lois and Gerry Tess.
