Mary Lies Obituary

Mary A. Lies, age 90, died on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at Blessing Hospital. She was born on September 12, 1935, in Manitowoc, WI, the daughter of Edwin and Jane (Cahill) Scholten. She married Richard A. Lies on August 25, 1956 in Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc, WI. He preceded her in death.

In the summer before college she was among the first group of girls that travelled to Germany with AFS, as an exchange student.

Mary was a 1957 graduate of Marquette University, where she was a member of Kappa Beta Gamma. She became a teacher and taught at the grade school level as well as special education.

She served as President of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Burlington, Iowa.

Mary volunteered her time at Goodwill and at the Fine Arts League in Burlington, Iowa.

After moving to Quincy, IL to be near a daughter she and Richard became members of St. Francis Catholic Church. Her love of history and sharing her experience in Germany after WW2 was apparent by all the stories she would share with her family.

After many years of supporting her children through golf events she later took up golf herself and enjoyed many years golfing with her husband.

She loved watching Marquette basketball games and was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan.

Mary liked entertaining and cooking. Loading up the car and traveling to visit her family, and the family trips to Las Vegas were among her favorite things. Mary always said she had the best birthdays in the world! She was creative and artistic. She was very competitive and enjoyed game time with her family.

Survivors include her four children: son, Richard and wife Carla of Clearwater, FL; daughter, Jane and Kevin O’Mahoney of Newtown, CT; son, Robert and wife Lisa Lies of Key Largo and Harbor Hills, FL; daughter, Katherine and Robert Harman of Fowler, IL.

Six grandchildren: Chris (Kelly) Lies; Jenny (Zach) Chwatek; Sean (Emily) O’Mahoney; Caitlin O’Mahoney; Lauren and Lindsey Lies.

Two great grandchildren: Remy and Elly Chwatek.

Siblings: Bill Scholten of Kimberly, WI; Jane (John) Crowe of Neenah, WI.

Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Jane Scholten, in-laws; Albert and Katherine Lies, sisters-in-law Marlene Scholten and Kathleen Rohrer; brother in-law Richard Rohrer.
