Sister Marie Gressel

Sister Marie Gressel, age 93 a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, passed away Friday afternoon, January 3, 2025, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, WI.

The former Teresa Marie Gressel was born on July 2, 1931 in Zanesville, Ohio daughter of the late Herman Louis Gressel and Helen Marie (Adams) Gressel. She entered the convent in 1949 and professed her vows in 1951. Sister Marie earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc, WI, and a Master’s Degree in Math through Catholic University, Washington, D.C.

Sister Marie ministered as a teacher at St. Philip, Green Bay; St. Paul and Silver Lake College, Manitowoc; Xavier High School, Appleton and Catholic Memorial, Waukesha, all in Wisconsin; Ironwood Catholic Central, Ironwood, Michigan; Rosecrans, Zanesville, Ohio. She was also the Directress for the Temporary Professed members of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, ministered as a seamstress for the Community and was a member of the Prayer Apostolate. Since 2012 Sister Marie had been a member of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc.

Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Herman Louis Gressel and Helen Marie (Adams) Gressel; brothers (sisters-in-law): George (Rosetta) Gressel, Herman Gressel, William (Shirley) Gressel and sisters: Sister Mary Rose Agnes Gressel and Sister Mary Veronica Gressel.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass will be the Rev. Placid Stroik, OFM, with burial to follow at the Holy Family Convent Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm at the Holy Family Convent Chapel. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.
