Sonja Witczak Obituary

Sonja Theresa (Maruga) Witczak, age 90, a Manitowoc resident, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2026 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Sonja was born on March 28, 1936 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Stephen and Theresa (Behnke) Maruga. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School, Two Rivers, and graduated from Washington High School with the class of 1954. Following high school graduation, she was employed at the Bank of Two Rivers. Sonja met Richard “Dick” Witczak and the couple married on August 2, 1958. Dick and Sonja proudly raised four sons: Scott, Mark, Michael, and Paul. Dick preceded her in death on April 12, 2023 after 64 happy years of marriage. During her later years, Sonja worked at Shady Lane Assisted Living for 20 years in the housekeeping department, working her way up to the supervisor of housekeeping.

Sonja is survived by two sons: Scott (Linda) Witczak and Paul Witczak; five grandchildren: Kayla, Dillon (special friend Kailee), Jordan (Emma), Susan, and Joseph; four great-grandchildren: Aria, Jade, Josie, and Cashton; one sister: Sharon (Don) Waterstreet; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Diane (Dave) Sleger and Pat Shack; and special nieces: Kay Kerchefske and Diane (Gene) Warner. Other relatives and friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Stephen and Theresa Maruga; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Harry and Lorraine Witczak; husband: Richard Witczak; two sons: Michael Witczak and Mark Witczak; two-day old twins: Susan and Steven Witczak; brother: Laverne Maruga; sister: Ethawyn Maruga; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Irene and Edward Morency, Helen and Edward Bialkowski, and Marilyn and Arthur Klabunde; and one brother and sister-in-law: Loren and Grace Maruga.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm noon on Monday, June 29, 2026 at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1033 South 8th Street, Manitowoc. Sonja will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 12:00pm noon on Monday, June 29, 2026 at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc.
